About the Book:

In the aftermath of solving their first murder, bestselling author Tess Harrow and her teenage daughter Gertrude have decided to stay in Winthrop permanently. Now that they've made some updates to their cabin in the woods, they're turning to the family hardware store that Tess inherited and converting it into the town's first independent bookstore.

But when renovations unearth bones from a cold case and send them toppling—literally—onto Tess's head, the work comes to a grinding halt. With the whole town convinced that her grandfather was a serial killer, Tess has to call in a fellow horror author for reinforcements. Together, they'll come up with a perfect story to make all the clues fit...and solve a mystery more than thirty years in the making.

My Review:

On Spine of Death is the second book in the By the Book Mysteries by Tamara Berry. Tess Harrow and her teenage daughter Gertrude are still reeling after the murder from book 1. Instead of moving back home Tess and Gertie have decided to stay in Winthrop. The cabin has been upgraded to fit a teenager's lifestyle and construction has started on the old hardware store that Tess's grandfather owned.

As the renovations are taking place, Tess is trying to learn first hand how to escape capture. In doing so, when the floor above her collapses, Tess finds herself buried in rubble and covered by a set of old human bones. Now the town thinks Tess's grandfather is a murderer and are convinced further when additional evidence is uncovered. To assist the local morgue with identifying the bones, Tess calls on her literary friend for assistance.

What ensues is a hilarious cozy mystery where Tess still has a blurred vision between fiction and reality as she tries to mold Sheriff Victor Boyd into Detective Gabriel Gonzales. Add in an excellent Bookmobile librarian, and zany antics by Tess, and this is another great book in the By the Book Mystery series.

The mystery itself is complex with several threads and suspects. There are suspects that have means, motive, and opportunity. Hidden dangers abound and there are surprises and red herrings around every corner. I enjoyed the twists and turns as Tess tries to maintain a sense of normalcy for herself and Gertie. The involvement of the past, how it collides with the present, and holds out hope for the future kept me wanting more.

The character development was done well throughout the book as we learned more about Tess, Gertie, the ex, the sheriff, and Nicki. I'm a huge fan of Victor and Nicki. They are patient and kind with Tess and her halfcocked theories, research, and suggestions. The chemistry between Tess and Victor is explored a bit more in On Spine of Death but nothing that overshadows the mystery. Nicki cracks me up. Her character is fantastic and I can't wait to see her again in the next book.

The setting was fun and interesting - a rustic cabin in the middle of the woods in Northern Washington State, a logging operation, and an old-timey downtown. The author created a wonderful world for these characters. I was complete engaged in this fast-paced story. The world building was done well and I was able to visualize everything.

About the Book:

Bestselling thriller writer Tess Harrow is almost at the end of her rope when she arrives with her teenage daughter at her grandfather's rustic cabin in the woods. She hopes this will be a time for them to heal and bond after Tess's recent divorce, but they've barely made it through the door when an explosion shakes the cabin. Suddenly it's raining fish guts and…is that a human arm?

Tess was hardly convincing Gertie that a summer without Wi-Fi and running water would be an adventure. Now she's thrust into a murder investigation, neighbors are saying they've spotted Bigfoot in the woods near her cabin, and the local sheriff is the spitting image of her character Detective Gabriel Gonzales—something he's less than thrilled about. With so much more than her daughter's summer plans at stake, it's up to Tess to solve this case before anyone else gets hurt.

My Review:

Buried in a Good Book is the first book in the By the Book Mysteries by Tamara Berry. Tess Harrow and her teenage daughter Gertrude make their way to Tess's grandfather's cabin for some peace, quiet, and hopefully, bonding after Tess's divorce. When they are barely on the property a few minutes and there's an explosion, Tess is concerned. She's even more concerned when there's another explosion and a very human arm comes shooting out of the pond, landing on Tess.

The explosions and appearance of body parts are quite the introduction of Tess and Gertie to the townsfolk of Winthrop, Washington, including the local sheriff who shares an uncanny resemblance to the Detective in the novels she pens. What ensues is a hilarious cozy mystery where Tess has a blurred  vision between fiction and reality as she tries to mold Sheriff Victor Boyd into Detective Gabriel Gonzales. Add in a an excellent Bookmobile librarian and this is definitely the makings of a terrific cozy mystery series.

The mystery itself is complex with several threads and suspects. There are suspects that have means, motive, and opportunity. Hidden dangers abound and there are surprises and red herrings around every corner. I enjoyed the twists and turns as Tess tries to maintain a sense of normalcy for herself and Gertie, and epically fails.

The character development was done well throughout the book as we learned more about Tess, Gertie, the ex, the sheriff, and Nicki. I'm a huge fan of Victor and Nicki. They are patient and kind with Tess and her halfcocked theories, research, and suggestions. There's a little bit of chemistry between Tess and Victor but it's not really explored in Buried in a Good Book. Nicki cracks me up. Her character is fantastic and I can't wait to see her again in the next book.

The setting was fun and interesting - a rustic cabin in the middle of the woods in Northern Washington State, a logging operation, a old-timey downtown. The author created a wonderful world for these characters. I was complete engaged in this fast-paced story. The world building was done well and I was able to visualize everything.

#CozyMystery #Review ~ Slashing Through the Snow (A Christmas Tree Farm Mystery, Book 3) by Jacqueline Frost ~ #Christmas @JulieALindsey @crookedlanebks

Maine innkeeper Holly White returns to sleuth another seasonal slaying in the third Christmas Tree Farm mystery from author Jacqueline Frost.

Book Details:

ASIN: ‎ B08SW3B341
Publisher: ‎ Crooked Lane Books (October 12, 2021)
Publication Date: ‎ October 12, 2021
Print Length: ‎ 298 pages

Amazon: https://amzn.to/40OLT3y

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56706289-slashing-through-the-snow

About the Book:

Reindeer Games Christmas Tree Farm is going into the B&B business, and Holly White is looking forward to her new role as innkeeper. Even better, Mistletoe, Maine's sheriff, Evan Gray, has deputized his little sister Libby to help Holly wrap presents for Mistletoe's toy drive. But a cold wind ruffles the cheery holiday decorations when a new guest checks in: Karen, a vicious B&B critic, who could make or break the new inn. And the short December days turn even darker when Evan and Libby find Karen's dead body in the gift-wrapped toy donation box.

The suspect list is longer than Santa's naughty list, and local resident Cookie is on it, since her fingerprints are all over the murder weapon, a metal nutcracker that she gave to Holly. So is Libby, who recently moved to town from Boston in less-than-savory circumstances. But cranky Karen was an oh-holy-nightmare to lots of the townsfolk, such as Evan's reporter friend Ray; Christopher, the inn's former contractor; and confectioner Bonnie, whose Gum Drop Shop was a direct target of Karen's scathing prose.

To figure out the killer's identity and clear Cookie's name, Holly and her friends brainstorm at The Hearth, the farm's café, while her mother keeps them fueled with Christmas goodies fresh from the oven. But if they can't put the culprit on ice, Holly may never see another Christmas.

My Review:

Slashing Through the Snow is the third book in the Christmas Tree Farm Mysteries by Jacqueline Frost. The mystery was solid, exciting, and kept me on my toes. I enjoyed the small-town setting and the main location of this book being a Christmas Tree Farm named Reindeer Games.

Holly is a fantastic, down-to-earth heroine. She's now the innkeeper at the new B&B on Reindeer Games' property. She's heading up a toy drive, managing the inn, and assisting with anything that needs to be done during the holidays at Reindeer Games and in Mistletoe. When Holly's new gift from Cookie becomes the murder weapon in the death of a visiting critic, Cookie is number one on the long list of those who had means, motive, and/or opportunity.

I loved Slashing Through the Snow. The murder isn’t the only theme in the book, giving the book realism. The romance between Holly and Evan, the sheriff, has moved deliciously forward but doesn't overshadow the mystery. I love their chemistry. The author included the perfect amount of romance into this series.  The reader is also provided excellent imagery, character development, and a great story.

The author's writing style is fluid, the pacing is perfect, and the story is so easy to read that when I reached the end, I couldn’t believe I was done already. I found myself engaged and completely captivated in the story from the very beginning. I really enjoyed Slashing Through the Snow and can't wait to start reading the next book.

My Review:

'Twas the Knife Before Christmas is the second book in the Christmas Tree Farm Mysteries by Jacqueline Frost. The mystery was solid, exciting, and kept me on my toes. I enjoyed the small-town setting and the main location of this book being a Christmas Tree Farm named Reindeer Games.

Holly is a fantastic, down-to-earth heroine. She has her family and friends backs and, even though the evidence of the latest murder points to her best friend, knows that Caroline is innocent. It appears that someone is taking advantage of Caroline's fight with the murder victim and setting her up to take the fall.

'Twas the Knife Before Christmas. The murder isn’t the only theme in the book, giving the book realism. There is a budding romance between Holly and Evan, the sheriff. I love their chemistry. The reader is also provided excellent imagery, character development, and a great story.
