About the Book:

In Cascade Springs, New York, Violet Waverly and her grandma, Daisy, are the proprietors of Charming Books, where the power of the written word is positively enchanting...

October in Cascade Springs means tourists are pouring in for the annual Food and Wine Festival, and Daisy hopes to draw those crowds to the store. She asks Violet and the local writing group, the Red Inkers, to give a reading of the works of Edgar Allan Poe on the shop’s front porch to entertain the revelers. Everyone eagerly agrees.

Yet their enthusiasm is soon extinguished when Violet discovers one of the writers dead in the shop moments before the event. After the shop magically tells Violet she’ll need to rely on Poe’s works to solve the murder, she enlists the help of her trusty tuxedo cat, Emerson, and the shop’s crow, Faulkner. But they must act fast before someone else’s heart beats nevermore...

My Review:

Prose and Cons is a wonderful second book in Amanda Flower's Magical Bookshop Mystery series.

Violet has settled back into her life in Cascade Springs, NY.  She is now running Charming Books, a magical bookshop downtown, with her grandmother.  During a town festival in Cascade Springs, Charming Books is hosting an Edgar Allan Poe reading.  Several members of the red Inkers writing group will be donning period costume and reciting some of Poe’s works for the festival goers.  When one of the Red Inkers meets her demise at the bottom of a staircase in Charming Books, Violet, her cat Emerson, and the magical bookshop soon find themselves embroiled in another investigation.

Amanda Flower’s second book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery is just as good as the first.  The author’s tangled webs woven throughout the story keeps the reader both intrigued and guessing what happened and why.  The world building and character develop continues in Prose and Cons as we learn more about the townspeople and understand Cascade Springs a bit better.  The pacing of the book is steady; not too fast or slow.  The author’s writing style is fluid and not overly wordy or descriptive.  I was able to visualize the entire book as I read along and enjoyed the character interactions.  I didn’t skim over any parts of this novel and never once was I bored.

As with book 1, I enjoyed the interactions between Violet and her grandmother and between Violet and Chief Rainwater.  Violet, her grandmother, and Chief Rainwater are very likable characters.  The secondary characters are also enjoyable.  The dialogue between everyone is believable and interesting.  I was engaged in the story from the very beginning.

The magical component of Prose and Cons doesn't overshadow the mystery.  The bookshop does its best to guide Violet through the murder investigation.  The tree, crow, and Emerson are terrific additions to this series.

I purchased this book myself. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Mystery novelist Sabrina Tate and her cat, Hitchcock, set out to catch a conniving killer in the next Bad Luck Cat mystery from the author of The Black Cat Knocks on Wood and Black Cat Crossing...

The town of Lavender, Texas is buzzing with tourists, and local businesses are pulling out all the stops for the annual Pumpkin Days Festival. On the eve of opening day, Sabrina comes face-to-face with her doppelganger, Tia Hartwell, a caricature artist at the festival. The similarities between the two women are striking, including their matching black cats.

Sabrina learns that her new twin Tia has an enemy: bad-tempered jewelry vendor Calvin Fisher. When Fisher is found slumped over dead in his pickup, Tia tops the suspect list. With the help of her feline sidekick, Sabrina must clear her new look-alike friend before she finds herself in a deadly case of double jeopardy.

My Review:

The Black Cat Sees His Shadow is a wonderful third cozy mystery in Kay Finch's Bad Luck Cat Mystery series.

It's Pumpkin Days Festival time in Lavender, Texas.  Local businesses are setting up tents to display their wares and tourists are piling in to partake in the town's festivities. As Sabrina strolls through the festival with her cat, Hitchcock, she walks right up to someone who looks just like her. The woman, named Tia, is one of the outside vendors renting a tent during the festival. She has her son and his pet cat with her. When it's discovered that Tia doesn't see eye-to-eye with another vendor named Calvin and he is found dead, Tia is the prime suspect. Sabrina makes it her mission to discover what happened and to prove that Tia wasn't involved.

I loved The Black Cat Sees His Shadow. The plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The book is engaging and will grab and hold the reader's interest from beginning to end. The descriptive content makes visualizing the scenes an easy task. The novel is fast paced and enjoyable. The motive for the murder of Calvin, as well as who did it, was cleverly disguised.

All of the characters are written with realism. The character development continues with the main characters and the addition of new characters. We aren't bogged down with unnecessary details or boring character biographies. We receive the right amount of detail and description for each character. The conversations flow smoothly and are realistic. They flow so well that you think you're standing nearby involved in the topic of discussion.

I was provided with a copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
